What Is Body Contouring? Part 1. The Basics.

At its core, body contouring refers to a combination of cosmetic procedures that can help reshape and redefine the body’s appearance. These procedures can include liposuction, tummy tucks, thigh lifts, and other treatments that target specific areas of the body to remove excess fat, tighten skin, and create a more toned and sculpted look.

Most people think of surgery when they hear the term “body contouring” but that’s not the only way to go about it. There are both invasive (surgical) and non-invasive (med spa) options available. Let’s dive into the difference and why you might pick one over the other.

Invasive Body Contouring

Invasive body contouring refers to anything that has to be done by a plastic surgeon (MD). Invasive procedures require entering the body either by a needle, tube, scope, through the skin, or a body cavity. These are expensive surgical procedures and generally come with a significant amount of downtime after it’s over.

Procedures that fall into this category include liposuction, tummy tucks, breast lifts, and arm or butt lifts.

Non-Invasive Body Contouring

Non-invasive body contouring refers to procedures that do not require “entering” the body to achieve the desired results. Typically, these involve massaging, fat freezing, and thermal techniques (but there are plenty of other options on top of those).

You can go to a med spa, cosmetic dermatologist, or plastic surgeon to get non-invasive treatments.

These procedures require little if any downtime afterward and are not considered uncomfortable by most people who undergo them.

Why Would You Pick One Over The Other?

The answer to this is a little complicated.

On one hand, invasive procedures are effective and considered a one-and-done thing, but they are expensive. And because you are undergoing surgery you are taking a risk of complications (a quick Google search on “liposuction” will give you endless articles of procedures gone wrong).

Non-invasive procedures are less money and have very little (if any) risk involved. On the flip side, they may take longer to get the desired results. And some results can’t be achieved in a non-invasive way.

It boils down to asking yourself what is most important: quick results but risky, or take longer to get your desired look but not having any medical risks involved. And of course, do you have the funds to go through with your choice?

Once you’ve made your decision, it’s time to find out if you are a good candidate.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Body Contouring?

Different types of body contouring will have different ideal candidates. A breast lift will have different requirements for candidacy than a tummy tuck. Fat freezing will be ideal for some while Radio Frequency Energy might be ideal for someone else.

In short, it’s always best to consult the center or medical practice that will be performing it.
