What is Profound®?
Profound® is an energy-based facial treatment that aims to stimulate the production of elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid in the skin. It has shown promising results in addressing aging skin concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, and cellulite, and improving skin elasticity without the use of fillers or toxins.
Why is Elastin Important?
Elastin is a protein found in the connective tissue of the body, like the skin, and it displays coil and recoil properties. This is the reason why the skin, heart, lungs, and other tissues maintain elasticity, allowing for their ability to return to their original shape after stretching or contracting.
Beginning in our mid-20s, the elastin in our skin begins to deteriorate, causing it to become less flexible and lose its elasticity. Think of your mattress after years of use, it becomes lumpy as the springs become old and lose their ability to recoil to their original shape.
After puberty ends, elastin production stops and the aging process begins. To build new elastin, you need to cause a certain amount of damage. This is done by heating the skin to an exact temperature so that the elastin starts to break down. By precisely heating the skin’s elastin and collagen to the optimal temperature for a specified duration, Profound® triggers the synthesis of new elastin and collagen to rejuvenate aging skin.
The healing process is what will build up new elastin.
What are the Treatments Like?
Profound® is a single treatment that can be done in our office, typically taking 45 minutes or less. Our trained Nurse Practitioners will administer a local anesthetic to make sure you’re comfortable during and after the procedure.
Some side effects include minor swelling, bruising, soreness, and skin redness in the treated area for a week to ten days after treatment. In most cases, these side effects are mild and easily managed.
Profound® promotes the natural production of new elastin and collagen along with other components of healthy skin. As such, most patients report seeing improvement in around six to eight weeks after treatment. Optimal results may not be seen until around three to six months post procedure. Factors that can impact how long it takes to see results include your age, health, and how you care for your skin post treatment (did someone say SPF??).
Some patients can see results stick for years with just one treatment with minor touch up procedures done to help slow the aging process along the way.
