April Is National Stress Awareness Month

This month is all about shining a light on the impact that stress can have on your mental and physical health. Stress can have a negative impact not just on your mind, but also on your hair, nails, and skin. With that said, let’s dive into the hazards that stress has on your skin and suggestions on how to manage your stress and take care of yourself more effectively.

How Stress Affects Skin

Stress can make your skin more sensitive and reactive, as well as slow down the healing of skin problems. Some symptoms that stress is affecting your skin include:

  • Increased inflammation.
  • Aggravated skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, acne, and psoriasis, as well as hives and other types of skin rashes.
  • Weakened resistance to skin infections.
  • Impaired wound healing.
  • Impaired resistance to infection.
  • Dull, dry skin, dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles.
  • Speed up the aging process by causing it to affect skin proteins

While stressed, some people also tend to drop their self-care and skincare routines which can lead to their own set of skin problems. Now lets discuss some things you can do to help control and reduce your stress levels (aka self-care).

Tips On Controlling Your Stress Levels

There are a plethora of suggestions out there on the internet of how to control your stress levels. Let’s focus on the things you can do that will help your skin.

Drink more water. We know it’s cliche, but staying hydrated does help. Trust us.

Do what you can of your skincare routine. Reduce the steps in your skincare routine to make it more manageable. At the bare minimum, cleanse your face and use your SPF. If you can manage more, great. If not, it will come in time.

Get a facial. Get a professionally done facial to help alleviate stress and make your skin look great at the same time.

Use products with calming scents in them. Lavender, oatmeal, and jasmine all have anti-inflammatory properties to them and can help with any inflammation that may happen due to stress.

Get more sleep. Do you want those fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles to stay away? Try to get in your recommended number of Zzzzzzs. Bonus tip: put down your phone at least 20 minutes before bed to help you fall asleep faster.

Get Botox. It sounds strange, but did you know that studies show people who get BOTOX are overall happier? If you think about it, it makes sense that if your outsides look good, you will feel good.

Do your favorite self-care activities. Whether that’s journaling, mediating, avoiding social media, or just taking some time to yourself, make sure you take time for your favorite self-care activity.
